With a little over 3200 miles on the 2004 RX-8 GT, it was time to change out the original factory fill in the manual transmission and differential units. It turned out to be a very easy job...
1. transmission, driver's side |
2. transmission drain/fill plugs |
3. removed drain plug |
4. draining... |
5. clean drain plug |
6. differential, back view |
7. messy plugs |
8. draining... |
9. clean plugs |
I didn't have a shop manual, so I used these Miata torque specifications:
ITEM | TORQUE (ft-lbs/N-m) |
---|---|
transmission drain plug (24mm) | 29-43/39-59 |
transmission fill plug (24mm) | 18-29/25-39 |
differential drain plug (24mm) | 29-40/39-54 |
differential fill plug (23mm) | 29-40/39-54 |
ITEM | Unit (US qt) |
---|---|
Manual transmission oil | 1.8 |
Rear differential oil | 1.4 |
7 Mar 2004: Updated torque specs for the RX-8, thanks to rx8cited at rx8club.com !
transmission filler/drain bolts | 27-48 N-m |
differential filler/drain bolts | 39.2-53.9 N-m |
rx8cited also noted these part numbers:
Transmission filler/drain plug crush washers - Y601-17-361 (oddly, description in Mazda parts system is "Tape, Protector")
Differential filler/drain plug crush washers - 9956-41-800
Both sets were identical in size except for the fact the the transmission washer were [sic] a bit thicker.
And the result? Well, several months and nearly 3000 miles after the refill with Red Line gear oils...
The shifting is beautiful.
(Of course, the shifting was already beautiful.)
-Cheers, jd.
